Crawfordsville Electric, Light & Power was officially recognized Sept. 3 as the Large Business of the Year by the Crawfordville Chamber of Commerce.

Representing CEL&P at an awards banquet held at the Country Club, Steve Gillan said the company has been serving the Crawfordsville community for 130 years.

“The Chamber has always been a high priority for us, but an even higher priority is our community,” Gillan said upon receiving the award. “We plan on being here another 130 years to serve the community and grow with it and do everything we can, in our power, to make sure the communities of Crawfordsville and Montgomery County maintains their reputations as one of the best in the state.”

The award was presented to Gillan by 2019 recipient Nucor Steel, represented by Trevor Beers.

“(CEL&P) is another established employer and local giant,” Beers said. “In 2020, they celebrate 130 years of business, 20 years of Chamber membership and national recognition in the utilities industry by the American Public Power Association for being a ‘good neighbor’ and commitment to their community.

“They serve not only (with) their time to assist with community projects, like making downtown Crawfordsville look extra special at holiday time, but also reinvest their resources year-over-year in the business community as a corporate sponsor,” he added.

The Large Business of the Year must employ more than 50 individuals and just as the Small Business of the Year, demonstrates success through growth and stability, commitment to quality, creating unique solutions to challenges and overall contribution to the community, Chamber Executive Director Cassie Hagan said.

The Chamber annually bestows awards for small and large businesses, entrepreneurs, community organizations, champions of change, distinguished women in business and up-and-comers. Chamber officials have the dilemma each year of selecting seven award winners from a pool of about 350 members.
