Chargers believe they can win own sectional

North Montgomery (8-13) will host a sectional for the first time since 2008 and it has brought more excitement into the Charger program.

Winners of three of their last four games before their final game at Greencastle, the Chargers believe they have what it takes to win the school’s 12th sectional crown.

“It’s exciting, this is our home court, and we need to defend it,” Charger Coach Chad Arnold said. “I think the guys are really excited about having the sectional at home.”

The Chargers are led by senior Kelby Harwood. He is the leading scorer in the Sagamore Athletic Conference at 19.5 points per game and rebounds at 7.6 per game.

Harwood leads the Chargers in assists (3.6 p.g.) , steals (1.7 p.g.) and shooting percentage (48%).

Junior guard Colten Arnold and sophomore Colin Zachary have recently added punch to the Charger offense.

Senior Cam Enlow has proven to be the team’s best 3-point shooter along with senior Cam Claycomb.

Defensive specialists and juniors Jack Warren and Kale Mitchell bring energy to the team.

North Montgomery hopes to get starting post player Caden Ireland back after missing a few games at the end of the regular season.

Most observers, including Coach Arnold, believe the tournament is wide open. Only one team, Delphi, has a winning record. The Oracles are 14-8.

The Chargers open the tournament at 6 p.m. Friday against Seeger (10-12). Arnold said there are four keys to winning the sectional game.

“We have to take care of the ball,” Arnold said. “Seeger loves to press and get into the ball and we have to be able to run our stuff and limit our live ball turnovers. We have to defend every possession. Every possession counts.”

Arnold also said the Chargers need to rebound on both sides of the court and take good shots.

“We are going to have to play well and play smart basketball to win the sectional,” Arnold added. “We believe the sectional is definitely wide-open.”
