A night after falling just short against county rival Crawfordsville in the opening round of the Sugar Creek Classic, North Montgomery took on Western Boone in conoslation game. Both the Stars and Chargers came out of the gates firing as they’d be even at 14 after the opening quarter. For much of the second quarter the two teams would remain even but the Stars would capitalize off a Charger turnover and drill a three to go up 29-22 at halftime. The second half for the Chargers was one to forget as they’d score just nine total points as the Stars cruised to a 57-31 win.
“We just seem to be never there and I see it in practice every day,” North Montgomery coach Chad Anrold said. “No one seems to be in the right spots on offense when we’re running our sets and it’s the simple things we aren’t doing right. I like our kids I really do, but but we don’t work hard enough or practice hard enough and that’s inexcusable to me.”
The tandem of Garrett Morton and Corbin Jones dominated the game for Western Boone (3-7 0-3 SAC). Jones led all scorers with 24 points by going 10-13 from the field and perfect 4-4 at the charity stripe. Morton added 22 in the Stars win.
Jakob Kirsch led the Chargers with eight points while Jarrod Kirsch, Kelby Harwood, and Colton Zachary all had six. Ross Dyson added four and Drew Norman scored a single point. North Montgomery falls to 1-10 (0-3 SAC) as the difficult season continues for the Chargers.
“We just have to go out there and compete each and every game,” Arnold said. “We did that against Crawfordsville, but obviously not tonight. I want to think our guys want to win, but it starts by watching film and come to practice and bust your butt and learn from the mistakes you’ve made. We’re at the time of the year where we have to start learning. We can be in every game and even win some of the games we’ve lost so far, if we just bring it every single night.”
Jakob Kirsch was named to the 2022 Sugar Creek Classic All-Tournament Team for his performance in the two games over the weekend. The schedule for the Chargers does them no favors as they will take on conference foe Danville at home on Friday night in the second game of a girl/boy double-header.
