LINDEN — North Montgomery’s girls basketball team lost the shooting battle in a 62-37 loss to Frontier.
The Chargers, who fall to 0-3 on the season, could only get a quarter of their shots to fall all game, while the Falcons, who win their first game and move to 1-2, fired up 28 three-pointers, hitting eight.
“We are a young team, an inexperienced team,” North coach Ryan Nuppnau said. “Sometimes that inexperience can lead to a little early panic, and that also adds to confidence in your shot. I thought we had some good looks tonight, but not many shots fell. As the season goes on, some of those shots will go in.”
The cold shooting and turnover plague made life difficult for the home team. 30 turnovers became 29 Falcons points, an while the Chargers forcded 26 turnovers, they were not able to convert on nearly that many chances.
Falling behind early, North faced an uphill battle from early on, but a much better second half from the field kept the margin at about the same number.
“We are all figuring out roles,” Nuppnau said. “Everyone is playing a different role from last season, incluing Piper (Ramey). Even the coaches are figuring out places and roles for players from practice to practice. It’s a learning experience every day, and while we have lots of places to learn and grow, this is a very hard-working and coachable team.”
Ramey led the Chargers in scoring with a dozen points, and finished her double-double with 12 rebounds.
“She draws a lot of attention,” Nuppnua said of the sophomore. “She is so unselfish, and she is growing into her role as a leader.”
Macee Norman followed up in the scoring column with eight, and the freshman grabbed 10 boards.
For the game, North was 13-of-50 from the field, 2-of-11 from long range and 9-of-18 from the line. The rebound tally came up even, with both teams getting 46.
Frontier was led in scoring Senior Laci Mears, who fired up 17 three’s and finished with 23.
Haley Jay had 10 points while the rebound leader was Kasee Anderson with seven. Six different Falcons players had five or more rebounds.
The visitors were 21-of-57 from the field, 8-of-28 from deep and 12-of-20 from the line.
“We are going to keep on working,” Nuppnau said. “That is a given for these girls.”
The Chargers are back in action Friday with a home game against Attica.
The Falcons travel to Fountain Central on Nov. 17.
