Chargers record-setting night leads to win over Tigers

LINDEN — The North Montgomery girls soccer team made some history Tuesday night as they played their final Sagamore Conference game of the season against the Lebanon Tigers. Junior Teegan Bacon led the record-setting night for the Chargers as she broke the single-game goals record by scoring all six Charger goals to lead her team past the Tigers 6-4.

Along with Bacon’s six goals, senior Courtney Engles tied the single-game assist record with three assists to Bacon. The win for the Chargers sees their conference record end at 4-3 (7-5-1 overall) which also tied their best mark in school history, and to cap off the record-breaking evening for the Chargers, Bacon’s six goals put her career goals scored at 68 (33 this season), which ties Sidney Campbell for the most goals scored in school history.

“Teegan plays soccer year-round, and she puts in the effort, and she deserves all of this,” North Montgomery coach Julie Hodges said. “Courtney has played with this group of seniors since they were kids and to see all of this happen on one night where our seniors were playing their last home game, breaking records, all of it was just fantastic to watch.”

“I feel like everything that I worked for, and this team has worked for is starting to pay off,” Bacon added. “With this being the last home game that I get to play with these seniors, who have been there for me emotionally and friendship wise, I just wanted to put it away for them.”

Coming off of a 2-2 tie against Class A No. 7 ranked Faith Christian on Monday and now adding a win against a team that has had the Chargers number for quite some time, Hodges knows that her team is saving their best soccer for the end of the season.

“We’ve had a very long season with the COVID stuff being thrown in,” she said. “There’s been so many ups, downs, mental exhaustion, and to be able to put this last week together and build some momentum heading into the post-season, we’re starting to play to our potential when it matters the most.”

The Chargers will conclude the regular season tonight as they travel to Greencastle before taking on Danville in the opening round of the sectional on next Wednesday.
