DELPHI — North Montgomery defeated North Newton on Thursday in the consolation bracket of the Indiana Kitchen Classic at Delphi. The Chargers beat the Spartans 66-41 to finish seventh in the tournament and stop a five-game losing streak.
The Chargers led nearly from start to finish and consistently widened their lead in the game. North led 34-19 at the half and 50-32 at the end of three quarters.
Charger Kelby Harwood led all scorers with 25 points. Cameron Enlow added 17 points .
The Chargers had seven players break into the scoring column.
North Newton was led by Joel Stalewki’s 12 points.
Earlier on Thursday the Chargers were defeated by Pioneer 54-47.
After leading 12-11 after one quarter the Chargers only scored six points in the second quarter and found themselves down 25-18 at the break.
Pioneer did not surrender the lead for the rest of the game.
Harwood led all scorers with 30 points. No other Charger was in double figures.
Freshman Pioneer guard Shiloh Rines led the Panthers with 23 points. Rines was 8-for-10 from the free throw line including 7-for-7 in the second half to stave off any Charger comeback.
Before the North Newton game Harwood was presented with a mental attitude award from tournament officials.
In three games Harwood averaged 27.7 points per game.
North Montgomery (3-6) will play Western Boone (2-7) at 6 p.m. Friday in the first game of the Sugar Creek Classic to be played at Crawfordsville.
