Chargers to square off with No. 1 Twin Lakes in sectional opener

It’s been a learning year for the young North Montgomery girls basketball team. The Chargers concluded the regular season with a record of 3-20 and will now get ready to open up Class 3A Sectional play on Tuesday at Benton Central. The loaded sectional did the Chargers no favors as they will have their hands full with the No. 1 ranked team in Class 3A in the 23-0 Twin Lakes Indians.

The Indians high octane offense scores nearly 62 points per game and only surrenders 39. They’re led in scoring by dynamic duo which features junior Olivia Nickerson and sophomore Addie Bowsman. Nickerson averages 19 points per game while Bowsman scores 17 and dishes out seven assists. Senior Addi Ward adds another 11.5 for the Indians.

For the Chargers they average just right around 30 points a game and are led by do-it-all sophomore Piper Ramey. Ramey averages right around 12 points per game and grabs nine rebounds, dishes out two assists and two steals. Freshman Macee Norman has been helping Ramey with the scoring load as she averages 8.1 a game and grabs 5.6 rebounds.

While it is a tall task for the Chargers, it’s a team the coach Ryan Nuppnau is excited to see how his team stacks up against the best.

“Even Twin Lakes who is as talented as any team, starts the post-season 0-0 again,” Nuppnau said. “As a player you should want to play the best and we’re going to get that chance. You want to see how you compare to teams like this. I’m curious to see how our girls take this game. Twin Lakes has about 4-5 girls who can really hurt you and are really tough to defend. I’m excited to see if we’re able to rise to the occasion and take on this challenge. We’ve talked all year about never backing down from a fight and that’s the hope that we keep fighting till that clock hits double zeros.”

The loaded Sectional 22 also features the likes of 18-5 West Lafayette who awaits the winner between the Chargers and Indians. In the bottom half of the bracket 16-8 Benton Central battles 15-8 Western and 13-9 Rensselaer Central takes on 2-20 Frankfort.
