Athenians have 7 top seeds in sectional finals

The Crawfordsville High School girls swim and dive team will enter Saturday’s Indiana High School Sectional Championship at CHS with seven top seeds in the day’s 12 events.

After the preliminary competition Thursday, the Athenians took the top seeds in the 200 medley relay, 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, 100 breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay.

North Montgomery’s has top seeds in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, while South Vermillion has top seeds in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.

The diving competition begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and swim consolation and finals begin at 1 p.m. Admission is $7 per person. Heading into the swim finals with the top seed and a time of 1:58.79 is the Athenian 200 medley relay team of Ellie Walker, Guinevere Schmitzer-Torbert, Sophia Melevage and Maesa Horton. North Montgomery’s relay team of Dusty Robinson, Katelyn Woolwine, Brooklyn Kerns and Anna Cain are seeded second with a time of 2:02.81.

North’s Kylie Sankey has the top seed in the 200 freestyle with a 2:06.08. Behind her are Crawfordsville’s Marie Hesler (2:09.64) and Melanie Dowd (2:11.26), who are seeded second and third, respectively. South's Darby Cottrell is seeded fifth with a 2:19.52.

Athenian Schmitzer-Torbert is the top seed in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:20.62. Her teammates, Mabel Hoar and Remy Swinford, are seeded fourth and sixth, respectively. North’s Robinson is seeded second in the event with a 2:24.59. Her teammate, Katelyn Woolwine, rounds out the championship heat seeded eighth with a time of 2:43.65.

Crawfordsville’s Horton is seeded second in the 50 freestyle with a 25.92. She will be chasing down Alicia Guinn from South Vermillion who touched the wall in prelims with a 25.74. Crawfordsville’s Melevage is seeded seventh with a time of 26.92. She will be chasing North’s Kate Merica, who is seeded sixth with a time of 26.62.

Melevage has the top seed in the 100 butterfly (1:02.84). North’s Ava Kilgour (1:04.87) and Brooklyn Kerns (1:05.90) are seeded second and third, respectively. Crawfordsville’s Mila Blackwell is seeded fourth (1:09.37).

In the 100 freestyle, Crawfordsville’s Horton is seeded third (58.58) behind two South Vermillion swimmers, Ali Cunning and Guinn. North’s Sankey is seeded fourth (58.82) and Crawfordsville’s Walker is seeded fifth (59.09). North’s Anna Cain (1:01.32) is seeded eighth.

In the 500 freestyle, Crawfordsville’s Hesler has the top seed with a time of 5:48.37. Her teammate, Katherine Novak, is seeded second (5:50.66). North’s Merica (5:56.94) and Kilgor (6.00.60) are seeded third and fourth, respectively. Crawfordsville’s Dowd is seeded fifth with a 6:01.39, and Southmont’s Astrid Rabeyrin is seeded sixth with a 6:09.40.

Crawfordsville’s 200 freestyle relay team of Horton, Melevage, Dowd and Hesler are seeded first with a time of 1:47.70. North’s team of Cain, Ava Mershon, Katelyn Woolwine and Kilgour are seeded fourth with a time of 1:54.63. South’s team of Cottrell, Maggie Gilliland, Amarah Shannon and Reva Douglas are seeded eighth with a time of 2:02.96.

In the 100 backstroke, North’s Robinson has the top seed with a 1:01.94. Crawfordsville’s Walker is seeded second with a 1:06.98. Her teammate Novak is seeded fifth (1:10.49).

In the 100 breaststroke, Crawfordsville’s Schmitzer-Torbert has the top seed (1.11.38) and her teammates Hoar (1:17.29) and Swinford (1:19.61) are seeded third and fifth, respectively. North’s Kerns is seeded fourth with a time of 1:17.91. South's Douglas is seeded eighth.

The Athenian 400 freestyle relay team of Hesler, Novak, Walker and Dowd have the top seed with a 3:59.45. North’s team of Robinson, Merica, Kilgour and Kylie Sankey are seeded second with a 4:06.67. South's team of Cottrell, Kendyll Bullerdick, Shannon and  Douglas are seeded eighth with a 4:32.54.

Crawfordsville won the sectional title last year — it’s first since 2019. They relied heavily on going three for three with its relay teams last year. This year’s Athenian relay teams remain stacked with veteran swimmers.

Winners in each event will advance to the state finals in Indianapolis.
