Church to distribute free trees

Posted

UPDATED:  Organizers notified the Journal Review that the free tree giveaway has been rescheduled for Saturday, April 15, 2023.

The community is invited to Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church, 307 S. Washington St., on  April 15 for a tree giveaway.

Two-year-old and three-year-old trees will be distributed for free, starting at 9 a.m. Distribution will continue until all trees are gone. People may receive up to 10 trees. If more are desired, recipients can return to the church at noon for more.

The trees come from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ nursery near Vallonia in Jackson County and are being shared as an eco-mission of the church.

“We have done previous tree giveaways,” said Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church pastor Rev. John Van Nuys. “We believe this is a good way to bless our community and care for creation. Our church has now distributed over 30,000 trees — one for every person in Montgomery County.”

Hardwood trees, pine trees and decorative, flowering trees will be distributed Saturday. All are native to Indiana and will grow well if properly planted and sufficiently watered. Along with the free trees, planting instructions also will be shared.

The tree giveaway will take place rain or shine. All are welcome.
