City formalizes lease for paramedicine offices

The City of Crawfordsville has formalized a not-for-profit lease with the Montgomery County Visitors & Convention Bureau to house the Crawfordsville Fire Department’s Division of Community Paramedicine in the former visitors center.

The community paramedics moved into the building on East Pike Street across from Crawfordsville Fire Station No. 1 in November.

Under the lease, the city will pay the visitors and convention bureau $1,200 per year and offset utility costs. The Board of Public Works and Safety approved the agreement Wednesday.

CFD’s Mobile Integrated Health Community Paramedicine Program was launched in 2017 through a grant from the Indiana State Department of Health and has gained worldwide attention for its portfolio of on-site medical care.

The Project Swaddle program offers prenatal and postpartum care for at-risk mothers and their babies. A Quick Response Team serves people with substance use disorders.

Community paramedics also focus on managing chronic diseases, preventing falls, monitoring patients released from the hospital, health screening and education, COVID testing and vaccinations and immunizations.

In other business, the board:

• Approved an agreement between the city and engineering company GHD Group for environmental consulting of brownfield sites after the city receives federal funds to assess and clean up the sites. The amount of the agreement is not to exceed $5,000.

Crawfordsville was among seven Indiana communities and organizations awarded funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s brownfields program last year.

A brownfield site is a property where redevelopment is often delayed by the suspected or confirmed presence of hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants.

• Approved a request from code enforcement officer Barry Lewis for the street department to mow the property at 1100 W. Market St. owned by Mark Sipe.
