City hires company to redesign Steele Park

Posted

The city has hired a Lafayette-based firm to redesign Kathleen J. Steele Park.

The Board of Public Works and Safety on Wednesday awarded a $307,900 bid to Spencer Construction for the project, which is being funded by an anonymous donor through the Montgomery County
Community Foundation.

Spencer Construction was one of five companies submitting bids, coming in with the second-to-lowest offer. City operations director Dale Petrie said Spencer comes recommended by the Tippecanoe School Corp., which hired the company for a project.

The plan calls for new playground equipment, a shade structure, decorative fencing and new landscaping. An existing basketball court will be moved to the park and redesigned.

The park, named after the retired Crawfordsville Community School Corp. superintendent, sits on West Main Street next to the Montgomery County Youth Service Bureau.

In other business, the board approved:

• A $466,811 agreement with HWC Engineering to design the project extending Schenck Road to State Road 32. Construction is expected to begin in 2025 or 2026.

• A request from New Hope Christian Church to extend the previously approved closure of Pike Street at Pike Place from noon to 9 p.m. Oct. 4 for an event.

• A request from Sue Lucas of Crawfordsville Main Street to close North Green Street from Market Street south to the alley from 3 to 4 p.m. Oct. 3 for Backstep Brewing Co. Oktoberfest activities.

• An application from resident Tom Siamas for a loan from the Crawfordsville Sidewalk Maintenance & Improvement Non-Reverting Fund in the amount of $7,650 for sidewalk and curb work at 1303 W. Market St. It’s the second household to seek funding from the city for sidewalk repairs this year.

• Work order requests from code enforcement officer Barry Lewis for mowing or trash removal from properties at 105 N. Blair St. owned by Michael and Diana DeVore, 303 N. Oak St. owned by Samuel Dreyer, 1100 W. Market St. owned by Mark Sipe, 6 Circle Drive owned by Lisa Clayton and 609 S. Washington St. owned by Arston Group LLC.

• A request from Lewis to forward a nuisance code violation at 1414 Danville Ave. to the city’s legal department. The code enforcement officer had asked owner Kirby Morgan to remove a pile of wood from the property. Lewis said not enough of the wood had been picked up.
