City locks in road paving money

The City of Crawfordsville will have the money to pave streets next year.

More than $466,401 is available to the city from the statewide Community Crossings Initiative for road projects. The Board of Public Works and Safety approved an agreement Wednesday with the Indiana Department of Transportation locking in the funds.

The city is required to match half of the grant. Funds will be awarded once a project is bid out.

The state has awarded more than $612 million in matching funds for roadwork. The program funds road resurfacing, bridge repairs or replacements and projects related to ADA compliance.

In other business, the board:

• Approved the street department’s request for temporary lane restrictions on East Wabash Avenue from Canby Avenue to Oak Street from Friday to Tuesday for road work, weather-permitting.

• Approved the route, street closures and police security for the Crawfordsville Christmas Parade on Dec. 1.

• Granted a request to have fire pits for S’mores at the Masonic Cornerstone Event Center, formerly known as the Masonic Temple, on Downtown Party Night Nov. 30.

• Authorized a consultant to submit a $300,000 EPA brownfields assessment grant application on the city’s behalf. The funding would pay for environmental studies at contaminated sites.

• Approved the 2020 sanitation budget of $319,380.

• Accepted the 2020 central garage budget of $186,064.

• Passed the 2020 storm water budget of $622,754.

• Approved a request from code enforcement officer Barry Lewis to remove trash from the property at 1009 Tuttle Ave. owned by Patty Busse.
