City sets trick-or-treating hours

Social distancing, individually wrapped treats urged

Ghosts and goblins will still haunt the streets on Halloween … social-distancing style.

The City of Crawfordsville is going ahead with trick-or-treating this year, with officials urging parents and individual residents to gauge their own comfort levels about asking for or handing out treats.

Hours have been set for 5 to 8 p.m., rain or shine, Oct. 31, which falls on a Saturday.

“The city has merely set the hours during which trick-or-treating may take place, but parents are ultimately responsible for making their own decision about participation,” Mayor Todd Barton said during Wednesday’s meeting of the Crawfordsville Board of Public Works and Safety, which approved the hours.

A vote will come at next week’s meeting on the usual closure of West Main Street that evening as usual, Barton added.

The decision to move forward with trick or treating comes after “much consideration and consultation” with the Montgomery County Health Department, the city said in a press release.

Trick-or-treaters are encouraged to practice social distancing and avoid large crowds, while residents are asked to hand out individually-wrapped treats.

Residents accepting trick-or-treaters are asked to turn on their outside lights and those not participating are encouraged to leave their outside lights off.

Other Montgomery County communities said trick-or-treating hours would be offered on Halloween, with social-distancing recommendations.
