Three veterans promoted to battalion chief

A new firefighter/EMT joined the Crawfordsville Fire/EMS Department as three veterans move up in the ranks to fill a new position.

Just as Zachary Aveline finished his oath in a swearing-in ceremony Wednesday at the City Building, a group of firefighters in the audience raced out of the room to answer a call.

Aveline, of Darlington, joins the department after serving as a volunteer firefighter in Darlington and as an EMT for S.T.A.R. Ambulance Service. He’s also worked as a laborer for Rieth-Riley Construction.

“I want to be hired to give back to the community and to help those in need,” Aveline said.

A 2016 graduate of North Montgomery High School, Aveline completed training in the fire/rescue program through West Central Career & Technical Education. He and his wife, Taryan, have a daughter, Kynlee.

Before Aveline was sworn in, the Crawfordsville Board of Public Works and Safety approved promotions for the new rank of battalion chief.

Jim Fulwider, Nate Patton and Scott Surber were selected for the position.

The department’s rank system was updated last week to assign a chief to each shift.
