City to pay for recycling costs through new solid waste district

The City of Crawfordsville will pay for recycling costs through the newly-formed Montgomery County Solid Waste District under a funding agreement with the county.

The district was created after the county pulled out of the three-county West Central Indiana Solid Waste District at the end of this year over the cost of services.

Under the agreement, Crawfordsville will contribute to the district the amount it pays for recycling in 2021 and 2022. The cost will be $54,000 in 2021.

The amount the city pays in future years is expected to change as recycling costs fluctuate, Mayor Todd Barton said during a virtual meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety. The board approved the funding agreement Wednesday.

“We’re going to change our approach to some of the recycling down the road,” Barton said.

The county will pay the rest of the solid waste management costs in 2021 and 2022, according to the agreement. The Montgomery County Board of Commissioners signed off on the agreement later Wednesday.
