Clarence “Gus” Mathison, 95, passed away peacefully in his sleep Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 21, 2022, at Ben Hur Health and Rehabilitation, Crawfordsville.

He was born Oct. 26, 1926, at Anderson, Indiana. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and the U. S. Army during the Korean conflict. He worked as an auditor for General Motors, and he belonged to Fishers Point Church, as well as the Scottish Rite. He was an accomplished fisherman and roller skater.

He was thoughtful, kind and selflessly generous. He could be stern, but he was always fair. He was highly knowledgeable in a great many areas, and he was happy to share his expertise when asked. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and he shared countless mutual in-jokes with his two sons.

He loved his family deeply. His presence will be profoundly missed by those who were lucky enough to have known him.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice Clark, to whom he was married for nearly 70 years; his children, Dr. Jeffrey (Ruth) Mathison of Orange Park, Florida, and Dr. Barry (Diana) Mathison of Crawfordsville; sister Ruth; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30 at Hunt & Son Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery South, with military rites by the American Legion and the U.S. Army.
