Psi Iota Xi
A Psi Iota Xi business meeting was held Sept. 9 at the Crawfordsville District Public Library with president Michelle Dice presiding. The business meeting was called to order by Dice, members were led in the opening verse and birthdays and anniversaries were announced.
Vice president Angie Griggs took roll call and Pam Karle gave the treasurer’s report. Naomi Horton motioned that the report be approved as presented, Vicky Reynolds seconded. Motion passed. Julie Swick reviewed the May minutes and presented the June meeting minutes. Jenny Slavens motioned to approve the minutes as read, with Karle seconding. Motion passed.
Jennifer Hunter shared correspondence. Correspondence not requiring action included the funeral visitation pamphlet for PIX sister Marilyn Goebel. A letter from the Lew Wallace Study regarding the Archie Camp was received. The letter included a thank you note from a camper sponsored by the Gamma Xi chapter. Two separate letters were sent congratulating the chapter for presenting the largest amount per capita for the speech and hearing projects. Taffy Day and Sandy Johnson sent the letters. Information regarding the national project proposals was received. Correspondence requiring action included a letter regarding tickets to Indiana Symphony Orchestra performances.
In old business, Hunter and Dice gave a summary of the national convention they attended. In new chapter business, members need to pay dues by Oct. 31. Hear Indiana sponsorship options were discussed by Horton. Hunter discussed the need for chapter support as she progresses through the ranks of the state level. She currently holds the PIX state secretary position. Bryant motioned that discussion be tabled until the meeting next month, Karle seconded. Motion passed. Mindy Frazee proposed the chapter explore options of sponsoring more liberal arts projects.
Committee reports were given. For cards and flowers, a card was sent to a current member for the birth of her granddaughter. For public relations, Karle will promote our upcoming cheeseball fundraiser. For the Elizabeth Backe Scholarship, Slavens shared details of the upcoming presentation of the first scholarship at Purdue on Oct. 10. For cheeseballs, Angie Griggs passed the sign-up sheet for cheeseball making. For patrons, Nancy Buckles indicated letters would be sent in early November. For Strawberry Festival, Karle gave an update regarding the fundraiser. Hunter motioned to continue the event next year, Horton seconded. Motion passed. For Summer Speech Clinic, Julie Swick reported on the event held through June. Swick motioned that the clinic continue next summer, Brea Carlson seconded. Motion passed.
The meeting was adjourned following door prizes, SPY gift presentation. The next meeting will be 7 p.m. Oct. 7 at the CDPL.
Dorothy Q Chapter
The Dorothy Q Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, met for its first meeting of the chapter year, Sept. 21 at the Elston Memorial Home.
The meeting was opened with the program, presented by Shannon Hudson. She took the chapter on a virtual tour of the Elston Grove Historical District with much history and lovely pictures. Since Dorothy Q’s chapter house is part of this district, the chapter was very involved. Thank you Shannon.
The business meeting was opened in regular form by past-Regent Terri Fyffe. Sharon Southern, as chaplain, gave devotions entitled “Messages.” Judy Fifer led the Pledge of Allegiance, Ericia Caldwell led the American’s Creed and Rita Kirkpatrick led the singing of the National Anthem. Rachel Brown led the patriotic song of the month, My Country ‘Tis of Thee. Michelle Borden read the President General’s message and Ericia read the National Defense report.
Rachel read the minutes from the June meeting, and after corrections, it was approved. Judy read the treasurer’s report which was filed for audit. Judy presented four bills for approval. Sharon read four notes that the chapter received over the summer.
For American Heritage Committee, Rachel explained the chapter will add one stanza of a patriotic song to each month’s opening ceremony. The songbooks passed out today will stay on the piano for this purpose. For Constitution Week, Terri reported that the U.S. Constitution is the oldest working constitution in the world. For Conservation, Terri reported that September is “No Plastic Straws Month” and Sharon reminded us that if you do not care for paper straws, there are reusable metal straws available. For DAR Schools, Rachel passed out the new list of products that carry the Boxtops 4 Education points and announced the phasing out of the cut-out pieces. In the place of the pieces, members are to use a new app for our phones that will scan grocery lists for participating products. Directions were given for downloading the app and its use. Rita reported for American Indians that there are 50 basic Indian languages with many different dialects. The Bureau of Indian Affairs recognizes 342 tribes. The Indian music is all purpose-driven and there are no love songs.
For House Minute, Rachel reported that we did well in selling brooms and constitution booklets at the Strawberry Festival in June, despite being rained out the second day. Many questions about DAR were answered and contact information was distributed. We were invited to participate in American Legion Post #72’s Veterans’ Fair on Oct. 17. The House may sell brooms and constitution booklets. The doors open at 7 a.m. for set up and the fair runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with free breakfast and lunch included. Anyone who is able to come help is welcome. Rachel also pointed out that members should take note of the new gravel on the expanded driveway as well as the new landscaping on the east side of the house. This was done to give us more parking and to increase the grade to prevent water seeping into the basement. The front door work is scheduled for October.
Rachel reported that the vote at Continental Congress in June was to form an in-house NSDAR jewelry company to replace Hamilton Jewelers. This transition will not happen until early 2020, so if anyone wants to order products from Hamilton’s, that can still be done. Terri has order forms available.
Terri also had registration forms for Fall Forum. The date is Oct. 26 and forms are due by Oct. 8.
