Long picks up pair of weekend victories
Wabash College freshman and former Southmont Mountie Reese Long picked up a pair of doubles wins over the weekend for the Little Giant tennis team.
Long teamed up with Reed Mathis for an 8-4 win over IU South Bend’s Holden Price and Jacob Kanaby at No. 2 doubles in a 6-3 Wabash win. At No. 4 singles Long fell to Kanaby 3-6, 6-0 10-5.
In a 7-2 loss to Greenville on Saturday, Long and Mathis defeated Austin Burkhart and Zach Merrill 8-7 at No. 2 doubles, while Long fell to Mathew Rodriguez 2-6, 5-2, 10-8 at No. 4 singles.
Gaskin, Greiner help Little Giants to invite win
Wabash College totaled 234.5 points in a dominate four-way track and field meet against Rose-Hulman, DePauw and Illinois Wesleyan over the weekend.
Southmont grad and Little Giant freshman Takeshi Greiner placed third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.25 seconds.
North Montgomery grad Mason Gaskin finished fourth in the hammer throw with a mark of 45.03 meters (147-09).
Johnson suffers loss, earns ND in last two outings
Former Crawfordsville all-state pitcher and Purdue Baseball ace pitcher Trent Johnson earned a no-decision in a 2-1 loss to Indiana on Friday, March 19 and took the loss in a 7-5 setback to Rutgers on Friday, March 26 for the Boilermakers.
In the 2-1 loss to the Hoosiers, Johnson allowed no runs on two hits, walking four and striking out six across six innings pitched. Against Rutgers, Johnson allowed six runs on six hits, walking two and striking out four in five innings pitched.
For the season, the senior is 0-2 in four games started with a 6.43 ERA. Johnson has struckout a team-high 22 batters in 21 innings pitched.
Merica earns win, ND in last two outings
In a 14-3 Franklin College Baseball win over Mt. St. Joseph, former North Montgomery pitcher Mitch Merica picked up the win with a 5 2/3 innings pitched outing, allowing three runs on six hits, walking two and striking out four.
Merica was back on the bump in a 12-9 extra-inning win over Earlham on March 27, earning a no-decision in four innings pitched. He allowed seven runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out three.
For the season, Merica leads the Grizzlies with 20 innings pitched, has allowed 16 runs on 23 hits, walking just six and striking out 17.
Franklin football moves to 3-1
The Franklin College football team has moved to 3-1 on the season with a 56-19 setback to Mt. St. Joseph and a 26-21 win over Bluffton.
In the loss to Mt. St. Joseph, former Crawfordsville standout Cale McCarty recorded a tackle.
Former Western Boone star quarterback Spencer Wright has played sparingly as the back-up quarterback for the Grizzlies, and has 17 rush attempts for 72 yards and a touchdown. Former Lebanon standout Evan Stambaugh has 24 tackles through four games.
Jones bat comes alive despite four-game sweep
Marian University Baseball dropped four-straight games to Mt. Vernon Nazarene University over the weekend, but it wasn’t due to a shortage of hitting. The Knights scored 33 runs in the four-game series, but allowed 53.
Former Crawfordsville power hitter Caden Jones had five hits and four runs driven in during the series.
Jones is hitting .260 on the season with 25 hits and 25 runs scored. He’s hit five long balls and driven in 17. Jones has started 29 games this season for the 16-14 Knights.
Zachary scores flurry of goals in loss
Former Southmont standout athlete Macy Zachary scored three goals in a 14-11 loss to Muskingum for the Heidelberg University Women’s Lacrosse team. For the season, Zachary has five goals and 10 groundballs.
Thompson, Williams return to course
Former Southmont standout golfers Bailey Thompson and Erin Williams hit the course over the weekend for Saint Mary-of-the-Woods at the Olivet Nazarene University Invite.
Williams shot a 196 for the two-day 36-hole tournament, while Thompson fired a 210.
