Johnson evens record
Former Crawfordsville standout pitcher Trent Johnson evened his season record at 2-2, picking up the win in Purdue’s 8-3 Big Ten win over Michigan State on Sunday.
Johnson tossed seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits, walking none and striking out eight. The Boilermakers are 10-15 on the season, but have won five in a row.
Johnson has a 4.83 ERA, starting seven games and tossing 41 innings. He’s allowed 23 runs on 42 hits, walked just 14 and has struck-out a team-high 45. His 170 career strikeouts have moved him into 15th all-time in program history.
Merica suffers first loss
Former North Montgomery standout pitcher Mitch Merica’s perfect start to the season for Franklin College baseball came to an end in a 4-3 loss to Rose-Hulman on Saturday despite a strong outing from the senior.
Merica tossed six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, walking four and striking out five.
On the season he is 3-1 with a team-high 33 innings pitched, has allowed 21 runs on 36 hits, walked 11 and struck-out 25.
Jones plugging along for Knights
Former Crawfordsvillle baseball power-hitter Caden Jones continues to be one of the top hitters for the Marian Knights.
In a four-game conference split with Grace over the weekend, Jones had five hits and a RBI.
On the season Jones is hitting .272 with 37 hits for the 19-24 Knights, including five doubles and six home runs. He’s driven in 21 and scored 31 times.
Richardson named HCAC track athlete of the week
Former Southmont distance runner Thomas Richardson was named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week on Monday.
On Saturday, Richardson won the 3000 meter steeplechase at the DePauw Invite with a personal best time of 9:35.84. He also set a personal record in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:16.69.
At the same meet, former Crawfordsville sprinter Tristen Bronaugh placed fourth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.08 seconds and fourth in the 200 meter dash in 22.52 seconds. Bronaugh was also on the 4X100 meter Spartan relay team that placed third in 45.56 seconds.
Greiner competes for Little Giants
Former Southmont hurdler Takeshi Greiner competed for Wabash College track and field at the DePauw Invite last weekend.
Greiner placed fourth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.84 seconds and eighth in the 400 meter hurdles in 1:01.52.
Long, Fry compete for Jags
Former Southmont distance runner Brooks Long placed 15th in a multi-team Gibson invitational at Indiana State for the IUPUI men’s track and field team. Long ran the 1500 meter run in a time of 4:00.4.
Former Crawfordsville distance runner Madison Fry was 10th in the 5000 meter run at the same invite for the Jaguars with a time of 18:10.
Hurt places third in steeplechase
Former Crawfordsville distance runner Maddy Hurt placed third for the Western Kentucky track and field team in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 12:14.78 at the Hilltopper Relays the first weekend of April.
Dugger competes at Little State
Former Southmont distance runner Kelsey Dugger competed for the UIndy track and field team at the Little State Championships over the weekend.
Dugger placed 13th in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18:58.55.
Grizzlies finish season with winning record
The Franklin football team finished its spring season with a 4-3 record after defeating Defiance 31-18 last Saturday.
Crawfordsville graduate Cale McCarty had a solo tackle in the win.
Former Western Boone Star Spencer Wright threw for three touchdowns in the win and former Lebanon standout Evan Stambuagh had an interception.
Fedor, Utterback helping Grizzly Tennis
Former North Montgomery girls’ tennis players Caitlin Fedor and Sydney Utterback have helped the Franklin Women’s Tennis team to a 3-4 start to the spring season.
In a pair of 9-0 wins over Ohio Christian, Utterback won at No. 2 singles, while Utterback won in the No. 1 spot.
Long, McKinney, Little Giants struggling on courts
The Wabash College tennis team has dropped seven-straight matches.
Most recently in a 7-2 setback to Ohio Wesleyan, former Southmont Mountie Reese Long lost at No. 4 singles to Jose Mancilla 6-0, 6-1 and lost at No. 2 doubles with Paul Hargitt 8-2. Trevor McKinney and his partner Reed Mathis fell 8-0 at No. 3 doubles, while McKinney fell 6-3, 6-1 to Marcelo Aguilar at No. 6 singles.
Zachary, Heidelberg soccer season ends
Former Southmont graduate and Heidelberg athlete Macy Zachary saw her soccer career come to a close with a 3-0 win over Muskingum. Zachary scored her lone goal of the season in the win.
