Johnson earns ND, Boilers start 1-3
Former Crawfordsville All-State pitcher Trent Jones got the starting nod from the hill in a second-straight Purdue Baseball season opener. The senior took a no-decision on Friday afternoon, allowing 10 hits and four runs, all earned, across five innings. Johnson walked one and struckout seven.
Purdue beat Nebraska in the season opener 6-5, on a walk-off sacrifice fly, giving Johnson a no-decision. The Boilermakers trailed 4-3 when Johnson left the game. Purdue went 1-3 agaist the Cornhukers in the season-opening series, and will be back in action on Friday against Michigan at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina.
Long, McKinney helping Little Giants
A pair of 2020 Southmont graduates are making an immediate impact for Wabash Tennis as freshmen.
Reese Long and Trevor McKinney have often found themselves in the lineup this season. Most recently, the duo helped the Little Giants defeat Franklin College 7-2 over the weekend.
McKinney teamed up with Reed Mathis for an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles over Matt Leming and Cooper Davis. McKinney defeated Davis 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles, while Long beat Leming 6-0, 4-6, 10-3 at No. 5 singles. Long paired with Liam Grennon in an 8-6 loss to Ty McCory and Camden Jones at No. 1 doubles. Overall both Long and McKinney are both 3-2 in singles matches. Wabash is 2-3 on the season.
Chadd in the Little Giants rotation
Southmont all-time leading scorer Cam Chadd has earned a spot in the Wabash basketball rotation this season as a junior.
In eight games, Chadd has totaled 22 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds. The junior is averaging 14 minutes per game for the 5-6 Little Giants.
Long 3rd in mile at HL Championships
Former Southmont standout distant runner and IUPUI junior Brooks Long continued to standout in the mile run when the Jaguars took fifth-place at the recent Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Long placed third overall in the mile run with a time of 4:20.33.
Fry competing for Jags
Crawfordsville 2020 graduate Madison Fry is competing for the IUPUI Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country teams as a freshman.
At the Indoor Horizon League Championships, Fry placed 12th in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18:25.2.
Fry also competed for the Jags in the Horizon League Cross Country Championships on March 4. She placed 39th with a time of 24:14 in the 6K race. IUPUI placed third out of 11 teams.
Dugger wins mile for Greyhounds
Former Southmont distance standout Kelsey Dugger competed in the 3K run for UIndy in its ‘Last Chance’ indoor meet at the end of February.
Dugger completed the race in a time of 11:23.52
Just a week earlier, Dugger won the mile run at the Indianapolis Track and Field Classic with a time of 5:27.48.
Pietrzak competes in MVC meet for Sycamores
Former Fountain Central standout distance runner Logan Pietrzak competed in the 3K run at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships for Indiana State.
Pietrzak placed 18th with a time of 8:58.38. The sophomore also placed 10th in the 5200 meter run with a time of 16:09.
Merica earns ND in extra-inning loss
North Montgomery graduate Mitch Merica earned the start for Franklin College Baseball against Defiance on March 7.
Merica tossed seven innings in the 9-8 11-inning loss. He allowed four runs in six hits, walked a pair, and struckout seven.
Jones showing off power for Knights
Marian Baseball is off to an 8-8 start, and Crawfordsville graduate Caden Jones is a large reason why.
Jones is hitting for a .224 average in 16 games (all starts). He’s hit four home runs and has eight RBI.
Zachary scores goal in loss
Former Southmont standout athlete Macy Zachary has found herself in the starting lineup for Heidelberg University’s Women’s Lacrosse team. Zachary has started all four games this season, and scored a goal in a 14-7 loss to Marietta. Zachary will also be playing soccer this spring, with the season starting this week. She was named an Academic All-American last fall for her efforts in the classroom.
Richardson helps Spartans at HCAC
Former Southmont distance standout Thomas Richardson helped Manchester to a second-place finish at the HCAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Richardson ran the first leg of the distance medley relay team that finished sixth with a time of 11:31.06. Richardson also placed ninth in the mile run with a time of 4:46.85.
Greiner records PR for Little Giants
Wabash College freshman and Southmont grad Takeshi Greiner scored a secod-place finish with a season-best time of 24.13 seconds in the 200 meter dash in a traingular meet at DePauw in late February.
Schaub competes in pool for Senators
North Montgomery grad Christopher Schaub has competed this winter for the Davis & Elkins Swimming and Diving team.
In a meet eat the end of January, Schaub swam the 1,000 yard freestyle in a time of 12:53.66. He also placed fifth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:12. In the 200 backstroke, Schaub swam a 2:34.67. He also competed in the 200 freestyle relay.
Mitchell helps Ravens to 3rd-place
North Montgomery graduate Lillia Mitchell recently helped Anderson College to a third-place finish at the HCAC Championships over the weekend.
Mitchell helped the 200 freestyle relay to a third-place finish with a time of 1:42.45. She was sixth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:19.6. She helped a 400 medley relay team to an eighth-place finish in a time of 4:23.35. Mitchell placed sixth in the 400 individual medley with a time of 5:13.04, and sixth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:45.2. She was also on the 400 freestyle relay team that placed third in 3:44.37.
McGrady, Bulldogs compete in shortened season
Former Crawfordsville standout swimmer Cami McGrady and the Butler Swim team competed in a shortened 2021 season this winter.
Most recently in a meet against DePauw and Hillsdale, McGrady placed 13th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:04.72.
Humphrey competes for Crusaders
Former Crawfordsville standout swimmer Emily Humphrey has competed for the Valparaiso University Crusaders this winter. Humphrey placed fifth in the 100 butterfly during a recent meet against Illinois State with a time of 1:11.44. She was also fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:16.18.
