COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Merica, Utterback earn HCAC honors at Franklin

Merica second in innings pitched for Franklin

Former North Montgomery pitcher Mitch Merica capped his senior baseball season at Franklin by helping the Grizzlies to a 25-14 overall record. Merica was second on the team with 47 2/3 innings pitched. The senior had an ERA of 6.8, allowed 36 earned runs on 61 hits, walked 17 and struck-out 39. He posted a 3-4 record in 11 appearances, including eight starts.

Merica was also named to the HCAC Academic All-Conference team. He will return for the Grizzlies next season. 

Utterback named HM HCAC

Former North Montgomery standout tennis player Sydney Utterback was named honorable mention All-HCAC for the Franklin women’s tennis team.

The senior posted a 2-2 record at No. 2 singles as the Grizzlies finished their spring season 4-7. Former North Montgomery player Caitlin Fedor also posted a 3-3 record at singles for Franklin.

Jones collects 43 hits for Knights

Former Crawfordsville baseball standout Caden Jones started 52 of Marian’s 54 games this season, as the Knights posted a 25-29 overall record.

Jones collected 43 hits and had a .246 batting average. He was second on the team of seven home runs and drove in 27 runs.

Long places 11th in Horizon Championships

Former Southmont distance runner Brooks Long finished 11th at the Horizon League Championships in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:05.47.

Gaskin, Greiner help Little Giants to NCAC title

Former North Montgomery thrower Mason Gaskin and Southmont hurdler Takeshi Greiner helped Wabash to its eighth NCAC outdoor track and field title back in May. 

Gaskin placed fourth in the hammer throw with a mark of 143-feet-4-inches.

Greiner placed sixth in the 110 hurdles in 15.46 seconds. 

Richardson wins HCAC 3K steeplechase

Former Southmont distance runner Thomas Richardson won the 3K steeplechase at the HCAC meet representing Manchester University with a time of 9:31.55.

Former Crawfordsville sprinter Tristen Bronaugh placed fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.15 seconds, while he placed second in the 200-meter dash in 22.59 seconds. 

Richardson also placed second in the 5K.
