NEW MARKET — Danville’s Ella Collier had yet another historic night in the Warriors 66-30 win over Southmont on Friday night in a Sagamore Conference tilt.
The senior torched the Mounties (6-5, 0-2) for 33 points on 14-of-21 shooting to move into a tie with Craig Brunes, a 1992 Brownsburg graduate atop the all-time Hendricks County scoring list with 1,778 points.
“She’s definitely upped her game again this year,” Danville coach Kaley May said. “A more mental mature approach to the game, and more of a leader, and looking to score in different ways than she has before.”
Collier, a Marian University commit, scored 24 first half points to give the Class 3A No. 8 Warriors )7-1, 3-0) a 43-17 lead at the half.
Danville flustered Southmont into 16 turnovers through the first 16 minutes, and held the Mounties to just 15 field goal attempts in the first half.
“They are just so big and long and athletic,” Southmont coach Dustin Oakley said. “They extend out in that 3-2 zone, and we worked on it the last couple of days, but it’s just hard to prepare for. They are just better than us.”
For the game Danville connected on 27-of-59 shots, while Southmont connected on just 8-of-32 shooting.
Scoring droughts plaqued Mounties for much of the game.
Trailing 22-9 after a quarter, Southmont didn’t score again until Hannah Thompson hit a free throw with 2:03 left in the second quarter.
And in the second half, the Mounties opened up the third quarter without a bucket until Addi Charles scored at the 4:03 mark.
The junior led the Mounties with 11 points, including a trio of 3-pointers.
Southmont made a couple of runs in the early part of the fourth quarter with baskets from Natalie Manion and Sidney Veatch coupled with a triple from Charles, but it was too little too late.
“We just backed down the first 12 minutes or so,” Oakley said.
“I just hate games like that where we can’t come in right off the bat and compete.”
Belle Miller and Veatch each added five for Southmont in the loss.
Maddie Patterson reached double-figures for Danville with 17 points, including five 3-pointers. The Warriors connected on 9-of-20 shots from deep — five from Patterson and four from Collier.
Southmont will look to end its two-game skid this afternoon with a home date against a potential sectional opponent in Monrovi at 2:30 p.m.
“Very winnable game tomorrow,” Oakely said. Very winnable game and we are ready to go. We still have a winning record. Sitting at 2-9 last year, and now we are sitting at 6-5 and have a good chance at winning two more games before break.”
