In the fall play taking the stage this weekend at Crawfordsville High School, flubbing lines is part of the script.

“The Play That Goes Wrong” will be performed at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Connie L. Meek Auditorium.

Tickets cost $8 for adults and $6 for students and must be purchased in advance by going to www.showtix4u.com and searching “Crawfordsville High School.”

In the show, a fictitious drama society stages a murder mystery in which a woman discovers her fiance dead the night of their engagement party at a manor. The production spirals into a comedy of errors as actors mispronounce words and pieces of the set collapse mid-scene, among other follies.

“It’s hard keeping that fine line between what’s supposed to go wrong and what’s not supposed to go wrong,” said senior Elizabeth Bowling, who plays Perkins, the manor’s butler.

Director Lisa Warren first presented the play as a pitch for the Sugar Creek Players at the Vanity Theater. When it didn’t receive a curtain call, Warren read the script for the high school theater troupe.

During rehearsals, the cast is reminded that most of the theater’s cardinal rules can be broken for this performance.

“We know that this is wrong, but it’s right for this show,” she said.

After the body is found, the party’s guests turn their suspicion to bride-to-be Florence Colleymoore (Kimbria Bowling) who denies killing her fiance and starts having another relationship.

“I love that she’s really dramatic,” Kimbria Bowling said.

Once the curtain drops on the high school’s production, the auditorium will host the Sugar Creek Players holiday production. “Elf” runs Dec. 2-5.
