Mattress and bedding product manufacturer Tempur Sealy will expand operations to Montgomery County with a foam-pouring facility expected to create about 300 jobs, the company announced Monday.
The Lexington, Kentucky-based company selected the county for the new plant following a nationwide search that was narrowed down to Montgomery County and another undisclosed Indiana community.
“We selected this location based on the robust business climate fostered by the state and local government, the quality of life the city of Crawfordsville provides its citizens and the property’s access to major transportation routes,” Tempur Sealy chairman and CEO Scott Thompson said in a press release.
Montgomery County Redevelopment Commission members were told in April that the county was “very close” to securing the company. In May, the plan commission gave a favorable recommendation to rezoning farm ground on East C.R. 200S owned by Wiley Connell LLC for industrial development. The request is awaiting a vote from the Board of Commissioners.
Tempur Sealy said it hopes to begin construction on a 130-acre site in the third quarter of this year, but did not say where it was located.
An approximately 700,000-square-foot facility is planned in the first phase of construction, with the ability to double the capacity over time, the company said. The plant’s size will eventually grow to roughly 1 million square feet, making it the company’s largest manufacturing facility in the world.
The plant is expected to open in 2023.
Local officials celebrated the news as a long-term investment for the community.
“Tempur Sealy’s choice to locate in Montgomery County demonstrates that our community’s focus on infrastructure and quality of life improvements has created an enticing business climate that attracts high-quality jobs and community investment,” said John Frey, president of the Board of Commissioners.
“We are thrilled Tempur Sealy has selected Montgomery County as the destination for its state-of-the-art foam pouring facility,” Frey added, “and we look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with our newest employer and community partner.”
Crawfordsville Mayor Todd Barton announced the news to applause at the Crawfordsville City Council’s committee meetings. He said Tempur Sealy would be a “great fit and a great partner” in Montgomery County.
“This is a display of what happens when it’s a total team in a community,” Barton said. “You know, there’s no one group, one person making this happen, it’s everyone coming together as a team knowing we each have our strong suits.”
