Cornucopia of Musical Gems

Myers Dinner Theatre explores lives of George and Ira Gershwin

HILLSBORO — The next production in Myers Dinner Theatre’s 26th anniversary season will be Fascinating Rhythm: The Gershwins in Song, conceived and compiled by Charles Burr and Bobb James, opening Friday with dinner beginning at 6:30 p.m., and running through Oct. 9. This production is being directed and choreographed by Burr with musical direction by Teresa Ross.

Fascinating Rhythm: The Gershwins in Song is a cornucopia of musical gems from two of the towering musical talents of Broadway — George and Ira Gershwin. The song list includes such favorites as “Embraceable You,” “I Got Rhythm,” “You Can’t Take That Away From Me,” “I’ve Got a Crush On You,” “Strike Up the Band,” and a host of others. The story of their writing partnership is told in their own words as well as tales from the people who knew them: Ethel Merman, Fred Astaire, Oscar Levant, Kay Swift and Kitty Carlisle. The songs the brothers wrote have become a huge part of the American Songbook. They are songs we still love today — or as Judy Garland sang to Mickey Rooney: “I love a Gershwin tune. How about you?”

This show will feature some Myers Dinner Theatre veterans in Elsa Besler (Woman 2), Thomas J. Besler (Ira Gershwin), TJ Bird (Man 1), Jordan J. Jones (George Gershwin) and Melina Smart (Woman 1). Making their MDT debuts will be Kayla Daubenspeck (Woman 3) and Nick Schrier (Man 2).

Fascinating Rhythm: The Gershwins in Song opens Friday and runs through Oct. 9, with Wednesday and Saturday matinees with the meal at noon and curtain at 1:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday evening performances offer meals at 6:30 p.m. with curtain at 8 p.m. Sunday matinee has the meal at 1 p.m. and curtain at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets may be purchased by phone at 765-798-4902, ext. 2, or by visiting the MDT website at www.myersdt.com. Performance dates vary, so consult the online calendar for show dates and times.
