Council approves annexation for vet clinic

A veterinary clinic’s proposed annexation into the Crawfordsville city limits was approved Monday by the city council.

The council voted 6-0, with councilman Jeff Lucas absent, in favor of an ordinance to annex the Crawfordsville Veterinary Clinic at 1834 S. U.S. 231. Clinic owners plan to build a new facility and hook into the city’s sewer system.

Construction on the new facility can begin under an intergovernmental agreement with Montgomery County giving Crawfordsville jurisdiction over zoning permits for properties that have formally submitted an annexation request to the city. The council previously approved the agreement.

In other business, the council:

• Approved a resolution giving the Parks & Recreation Department permission to seek an Indiana Department of Transportation grant to add a new vehicle to its fleet of Sunshine Vans. This year the grant will cover the entire cost of the vehicle. Typically, the city has to match a percentage of the funds.

The application is due in March and it usually takes a little more than a year for a new vehicle to arrive. The city is waiting on two vans it applied for in 2020. There were eight vans and two sedans in the fleet prior to last year’s application. One of the vans was being retired after hitting the mileage limit.

• Approved on first reading an amendment to the city’s code pertaining to business travel and payment of mileage. The State Board of Accounts suggested the change.

• Approved on first reading an ordinance establishing a capital asset inventory policy. Mayor Todd Barton explained that the city has already been doing this, but that the city didn’t have a written policy. The new policy will outline what capital assets are to be included and how the city will track it each year. This written policy also was initiated at the request of the State Board of Accounts.

• Approved on first reading an ordinance vacating the north-south alley between 906 and 908 Tuttle Ave.

• Learned Barton hopes to return to in person committee and full council meetings in March. The move from virtual back to in person meetings will take place as long as the county’s positivity rate stays stable.
