County addressing malfunctioned tornado sirens

Posted

Two Montgomery County tornado sirens have malfunctioned, said emergency management director Shari Harrington.

The sirens are at C.R. 50S and 200W and in Lake Holiday, where there is only one siren for the county’s second-largest community.

Crews are working to get the parts to fix the siren near the Big Four Crossing subdivision, Harrington told the Montgomery County Council Tuesday. It can take up to two months to complete repairs.

Lake Holiday will cover the costs of repairing its siren under an existing agreement with the emergency management agency.

Harrington said she has spoken with the community about installing a second siren. Only about half of Lake Holiday is covered by the one alarm.

“We’re looking for an area right now,” said Harrington, noting the importance of sirens in an area with spotty cell phone service.

Citizens can also receive weather alerts by phone or email through the county’s mass notification system. Text “MOCO 54” to 99411 to sign up.
