County going back to ‘travel watch’ at noon

Drivers asked to stay off roads so crews can reopen roads

Montgomery County will go back into the travel watch status at noon today, county administrator Tom Klein said.

A travel watch means only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations, is recommended. Drivers are asked to stay off the roads until noon.

Road crews were making progress with opening the roads, county officials said, but stuck or abandoned cars will slow down the work.

A fresh crew of Montgomery County Highway plow drivers hit the roads this morning and a full crew will be on duty in the afternoon.

“The wind has died down, so that has helped us get ahead of the snow,” Klein said shortly before 9:30 a.m. The county declared a travel warning around 8:30 p.m. Monday as winds made it impossible for crews to stay ahead of the blowing and drifting snow. Travel was restricted to emergency vehicles only.

The storm had dumped 8 inches of snow in the Crawfordsville area by 7 a.m. today, according to the National Weather Service.

All local schools and county offices are closed today. The COVID-19 testing site on North Green Street will remain closed through Wednesday. Anyone previously scheduled will be moved to Thursday, the health department said.

Another round of winter precipitation is possible Wednesday night into Thursday night, which could lead to additional travel difficulties, according to NWS.
