Crawfordsville’s girls and boys swim and dive teams each won county championships on Saturday at the Crawfordsville Aquatic Center. Winning times and depth propelled the Athenians to the victories.
The girls’ score totals were Crawfordsville 295, North Montgomery 266 and Southmont 69. Scores in the boys’ meet were Crawfordsville 239 and North Montgomery and Southmont tying for second place with 199 points.
Crawfordsville swim coach Kevin Hedrick said his two squads had the effort and depth to bring home the championships.
“Overall it was a team good effort with our boys and girls,” Hedrick said. “Nearly all our swimmers had season bests today. Our experience on the girls side is evident. The boys were just good enough in the whole meet to get the win. Depth in the county meet is by far a huge difference in the county meet.”
North Montgomery coach Erin Yeager said her teams performed well and the meet gives them a good idea of where they need to improve.
“We had a lot of fast swims and some really big steps up on the boys’ team,” Yeager said. “My girls did outstanding. We have some things to work on over Christmas break and I am excited to see where this all leads us.”
Southmont coach Dan McCormick was pleased his boys were able to finish second. He knew his young girls team will learn from the meet.
“I thought we had very competitive meets, especially on the boys side,” McCormick said. “The boys won four events and our young girls team will work on the some of the basics cleaned up. We are excited for the second half.”
All three coaches are looking forward to a winter break and will not gather again until Thursday when all six teams start the climb to improved times.
