Dakota, 12, waits for a mentor

Posted

The Montgomery County Youth Service Bureau, JUMP program, has several boys on its waiting list hoping to be matched with a mentor. They can be matched with a male over the age of 21 or a married couple who are willing to mentor together as a team. The following is a profile of a young man on the waiting list who would really love to have a mentor. His name and age have been changed slightly to protect his privacy.

Dakota is 12 years old and is a big sports fan. He loves football, soccer, baseball, basketball, running and any type of exercise. He also enjoys fishing, swimming and camping. If Dakota could learn something new, it would be how to cook. For fun he likes to go shopping or to amusement parks and he loves to eat at Panera Bread restaurant or Chick-fil-a. When he grows up he wants to be a professional athlete and a person he really admires is Stephen Curry.

Dakota’s mom describes him as smart, helpful and a person who loves sports. She says he makes good grades at school and is especially good in math and spelling. Dakota is also bilingual and speaks both Spanish and English.

Jill Hampton, JUMP program manager, said, “Dakota seems like a very nice kid whose is respectful of adults. He is easy to talk to and very excited to have a mentor. He would love to be matched with a man or married couple that are active and love to go to ballgames and do outdoor activities.

If you are a male over the age of 21 or a married couple that has similar interests with Dakota, think about becoming a mentor. If you would like more information or would like to apply to become a volunteer, contact Jill Hampton at 765-362-0694, ext. 103, or email jill@mcysb.org.
