Daniel “Big D” Thomas Surface, 66, of Crawfordsville passed away on Friday, Nov. 29, 2024, at Franciscan Health Lafayette.
He was born April 5, 1958, at Crawfordsville, to the late Thomas L Surface and Sandra Lucille (Harwood) Andrews.
Dan attended Fountain Central and Southmont high schools. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1975.
He was a long-time concrete contractor and worked at DJJ Company at Nucor Steel. He loved fishing, mushroom hunting and drag racing at Bunker Hill. He was a man who loved a short race and a tall tale.
He is survived by his children, Daniel (Christina) Surface of Noblesville, Samantha (Adam) Sperry of Crawfordsville, Jacob Surface and Emily Bales; sister Jeanie Cummins of Crawfordsville; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son Perry Arthur Surface; grandson Asher Valen Surface; brother Robert Alan Surface; and his dogs, Marley and Mojo.
Visitation will be at Sanders Funeral Care, 315 S. Washington St., Crawfordsville, on Thursday, Dec. 5 from 4 p.m. until the time of the celebration of life service at 6 p.m., with military honors by the United States Navy and Legion Post 72 Honor Guard. Cremation will follow the service.
