LINDEN — If a 12-2 burst to start to the game wasn’t enough, Danville went on a 31-0 run in a 72-24 Sagamore Conference win over North Montgomery on Friday night in girls’ basketball.
Hadley Broadwater went 1-of-2 from the free throw line for the Chargers to make it 25-8 in favor of Danville at the 3:31 mark in the second quarter, and North Montgomery failed to score again until Madi Welch made a free throw with 2:04 left in the third quarter — as the Warriors had multiplied their lead to 56-9.
“The end of the second, and beginning of the third really sealed it for them,” Chargers coach Ryan Nuppnau said. “We just couldn’t overcome it.”
In total the Chargers (9-10, 2-3 SAC) went 9:27 without a point, and 15:28 without a field goal.
Turnovers were the biggest culprit for North, with 16 in the first half, and 29 for the game. The Chargers also connected on just 7-of-39 field goals, while Danville (14-5, 6-0 SAC) was 27-of-50 for the game.
“They (Danville) just play hard,” Nuppnau added. “And they anticipate well defensively. We were a little hesitant when it come to our passes and decision making, and we didn’t do a good job closing out shooters.”
It was a balance attack for the Warriors, who are led by Marian University commit Ella Collier’s 24 points per game. Collier, a recently new member to the 2,000-point club, got her average with a game-high 25 points, while Maddie Patterson added 20, and Chloe Gould 14. The Warriors hit 7-of-15 shots from behind the arc.
“She (Collier) makes everyone around her better,” Nuppnau said. “Because she brings attention to her, but everyone around her can put the ball in the hoop too.”
Maddie Moseley led the Chargers with six points, while Madi Welch and Lydia Dugard added five apiece.
The Chargers are back in action on Tuesday at home against a 15-2 Seeger team that is allowing just 26 points per game.
“It’s a very patient offense, and they do a good job of controlling the ball and the time,” Nuppnau said. “That’s what really helps them with keeping it low-scoring.”
