Sunday afternoon couldn’t have been more perfect for Wabash College Basketball. The Little Giants hosted the College of Wooster as the top two teams in the North Coast Athletic Conference squared off. Senior Jack Davidson needed just 26 points to become the all-time leading scorer in Wabash College history while the Little Giants with a win would secure a two-game lead atop the conference.
Davidson looked well on his way to history as he scored 20 points in the first half and with 9:09 left in the second half Davidson drove the right baseline and scored his 2,067th point of his career passing Josh Estelle to become the all-time leading scorer in Wabash College Basketball history. Davidson would go on to score 31 points as the Little Giants defeated Wooster 94-80.
“That sounds pretty good,” Brumett said of his team gaining sole possession of first place in the NCAC. “That’s been the goal since we got here and this has been a huge week for us. We’re just really locked in right now. Our three of our seniors are really taking our team to a whole nother level. We beat a really talented team when I felt like we didn’t play our best says a lot about this group.”
The Little Giants carried a 51-38 lead into halftime but Wooster cut the Little Giant lead to as little as five multiple times but Wabash never allowed them to get any closer.
Ahmoni Jones along with Davidson’s 31 scored a career high 28 points and Kellen Schreiber added 16 for Wabash. However the day belonged to Davidson who talked about his record-breaking day.
“It’s pretty surreal and I don’t know if it’s sunk in yet,” Davidson said of becoming the all-time leading scorer in Little Giant history. “First and foremost I really wanted to get that win. The record is awesome. I really didn’t know when it would happen but to do it in a game like this is special. I have to thank my coaches, teammates, family and everyone that’s supported me. I couldn’t have done it without them.”
His 31 points give Davidson 2,071 for his career and the Little Giants still have six games remaining in the regular season plus the NCAC Tournament. Brumett as he has done many times this season spoke about Davidson’s greatness now that he has etched himself into Wabash College history.
“I’ve said so many times that he’s a special player and I truly mean that,” Brumett said. “Players like Jack don’t come around often. He’s been the engine all along to get us rolling and I couldn’t be more proud of him. I’m not surprised at all that he got it done today in one of our biggest games.”
While the day did belong to Davidson, he made sure that his teammates got the credit that they deserve for helping him and his team come away with one of the biggest wins of the season.
“We have so many different guys who can score and that’s what makes us real dangerous,” Davidson said. “Ahmoni had an outstanding game tonight and Kellen did what he normally does. It’s huge for us to have all of those guys that can step up whenever we need them to.”
Brumett did make sure that Jones who often gets overlooked with the big three of Watson, Schreiber and Davidson normally carrying the load. The Junior ended the game against Wooster 10-15 from the field and 7-9 from the free throw line.
“He’s continued to get better all season and you can see his game has evolved,” Brumett said. “I think earlier in the season everything was happening a little too fast for him, but all of a sudden he got hot from three for a good stretch. He’s started to use his shot fake well and drive the ball very well and draw fouls. Now he’s started to play at a high level and that’s a dangerous thing for opposing teams.”
With the win Wabash now has an 11 game winning streak and sees their record on the season improve to 15-3 (10-1 NCAC). They will be back in action next Friday when they host Allegheny.
“We’re playing extremely well,” he said. “Overall to be able to cap off the week this win and put us a 10-1 in the league is a real gratifying feeling.”
