The Dorothy Q Chapter, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, met at 1 p.m. Oct. 15 in the Elston Memorial House, with Regent Michele Borden presiding, as she welcomed 10 members.

Ten members contributed to a pitch-in luncheon for a wonderful spread of home made dishes and varied deserts. It was a wonderful time to chat in a rearranged meeting space enjoying each other’s company before the meeting began.

Borden opened the meeting beginning the call to order leading us in reciting, the Pledge of Allegiance, American’s Creed and Preamble to the Constitution, followed by singing the National Anthem.

Gloria White read the President General’s Message, celebrating 132 years of DAR which was established in 1890. It was also the 130th anniversary of the Pledge of Allegiance and we are all encouraged to share the great news and highlight the anniversary with all. Erica Church then read the National Defender reminding everyone to register for voting for the Nov. 8 midterm election.

Secretary Alexandria Southern then read the meeting notes from Sept. 17. They were approved as read. Regent Michele Borden read the treasurer’s report, in which Terri Fyfe recommends the profits for the banners are recorded separately. Other items brought up for discussion of purchase were a 125 year ribbon for the DAR flag, good citizenship packets, a parking sign and reflectors for the drive. With no quorum no votes were made. The report was then filed for audit. Borden then reminds the chapter of three ways to donate to Dorothy Q and the school Kate Duncan Smith; Kroger card, Box Tops for Education and Amazon smile.

Borden then began with our committee reports: Banners; Borden picked up the banners just the day before and showed off two from the selection. They were gorgeous and set to be hung on the street the following week. Jan Bridge on Native American Indians; Bridge tells the group about Devil’s Tower and all the tales the northern plains indians had surrounding the region. Conservation Report: Alexandria Southern discusses a new species of ants that seem to have evolved in recent years to eat plastics. Project Patriot; Borden reminds everyone to cut out and bring in manufacturer’s coupons for Rita Kirkpatrick to send off. DAR Service to Veterans; Barb Taylor discusses the Veterans Expo on Oct. 20 at the American Legion where members will be volunteering for greetings, registers and handing out books. New Business: Borden takes a moment to remind the group of several upcoming dates and events. Including the Vietnam Veterans Expo on Oct. 20, the Fall Forum Oct. 29 and the Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 11.

Project Patriot: Don’t forget to bring in your short story of your ancestor who served in the Revolutionary War to share and to be submitted to state and nationals to assist others joining NSDAR.

Next month’s meeting is at 2 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Elston Memorial Home for a Veterans Service Officer presentation of the folding and presentation of the American Flag.
