Dr. Carl Bruce Howland, 88, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 21, 2021, at the Lane House.

He was born May 6, 1932, at Gary, to the late Charles Bruce and Helen (Huminsky) Howland.

Bruce graduated in 1950 from Horace Mann High School, Gary. He then attended St. Joseph College, Renessalaer, where he studied pharmacy, after attending St. Joseph Bruce obtained a position as a pharmacist in Remington and Renessalaer. While attending Purdue his friend Bob Foster introduced him to Bonny Sekema. In December of 1953 Bruce and Bonny were married with Bob Foster and Nancy Besse at their side. He graduated from Purdue in 1954. Bruce entered the service in 1955. He left the Army in 1957 with a honorable discharge. Bruce then attended IU until 1967 graduating with his medical degree. His internship was at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.

After being asked by Dr. Samuel Millis, Bruce and his family moved to Crawfordsville in June 1968. He began his general practice at Green Acres in July 1968. Dr. Howland served the Crawfordsville community for 30 years retiring in 1997. Bruce also was the county health officer for many years. He was on the board of directors at Culver Union Hospital. He served as attending team physician for North Montgomery High School in the 1970’s. He had membership with the Elks and the American Legion.

Bruce had a great bed side manner and a wonderful sense of humor. Bruce was an avid fisherman and hunter. He took annual trips with his son, Andy, and friends in South Dakota. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family and friends. Bruce and his wife went on several cruises, including Alaska and Tahiti. He also was an experienced pilot owning two private aircrafts. In his leisure time he enjoyed music, dancing, poker and other games.

Dr. Howland is survived by sister Dorothy (Jack) Brennan, St. Louis, Missouri; son Jeffery (Darla) Howland; grandson Eric Howland; granddaughter Elizabeth Howland, New Market; step-grandson Aaron (Meredith) Sudduth, Bargersville; step-granddaughter Amber (Bill) Carrigan, Fowler; step-grandchildren Abagayle, Clay, Waylon Carrigan and Kendalyn Sudduth; also nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his wife, Bonnybell (Sekema) Howland; daughter Tracy Howland; and son Thomas Andrew Howland.

Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Friday, March 26 at Hunt and Son Funeral Home, with a funeral service immediately following. Pastor Nate Chambers will officiate. After cremation his remains will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery.
