Edward “Ed” George, 84, of rural Veedersburg passed peacefully at his farm at 9:27 p.m. Friday, Jan. 1, 2021, at home, surrounded by his family.
He was born June 24, 1936, at Crawfordsville, the son of Ray T and Mary Elizabeth (Harbison) George.
Ed graduated from Covington High School in 1954 and attended Iowa State University. He proudly served in the Army National Guard from 1959-1964. He was a life resident of Fountain County, where he raised his family on the farm that he and Mary built. Over the years, their farming operation consisted of row crops, alfalfa, cattle and hogs.
He was an active member of Covington United Methodist Church, Covington Jaycees and Indiana Farm Bureau Inc. Ed believed in community service and put that into action by serving on the Fountain County Council for 14 years, as well as many years of service on the Community Corrections Board. Ed was a lifelong supporter of the 4-H program. He was a 10-year member, 4-H Foundation member and active fair volunteer. Fishing trips to Canada with the OHB group were a special summer highlight. Ed rarely missed his children or grandchildren’s events as he loved supporting them, both near and far.
Ed married Mary Alice Livingston on June 16, 1958, at Covington United Methodist Church. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Steven (Regina) George and Kevin (Elaine) George, both of Veedersburg; daughter Susan (Scott) Lawrence of Avilla, Indiana; 10 grandchildren, Ray (Audrey) George, Brad (Elizabeth) George, Brian (Christie) George, Cory (Breanna) George, Diane Simonton, Kimberly (Scott) Corley, Melissa (Alex) Deneau and Samuel, Sarah and Sage Lawrence; and 10 great-grandchildren.
His parents preceded him in death.
Private family services will be conducted Tuesday, Jan. 5 at Shelby Funeral Home in Covington, with the Rev. Mason Shambach officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
