Edwin “Ed” Dale Stewart, 73, passed away Friday evening, Aug. 20, 2021, at Roudebush VA Medical Center, Indianapolis, after a long battle with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia.

Ed was born Jan. 1, 1948, at Crawfordsville, to Wallace “Wally” and Mary “Louise” Stewart. He attended St. Bernard’s Catholic School, then graduated from Waynetown High School in 1966. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1967-1969. While serving in the Army, Ed attended ANCOC - Non-Commissioned Officer Candidate School. He was an E6 Staff Sergeant. He received many awards while serving his country. While in Vietnam he was a tank commander. Ed received the Purple Heart after injuries sustained while in combat.

He was self-employed, owning and operating an automotive repair shop, then Eastside Auto Parts salvage yard. He worked there until his retirement in 2003. He was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church where he served as an usher for many years. Ed loved his family and friends and enjoyed spending time with them. He and his wife loved hosting family get-togethers. He was a proud member of the Vietnam Veterans Association and the DAV. He enjoyed stock car racing, restoring his 1932 Ford Coupe and working at his garage. He was a member of a pit crew, enjoyed watching NASCAR and the Indianapolis Colts, and attending Vietnam Veteran reunions across the country.

He married Elizabeth “Libby” McKeown in 1970. Together they raised three children, Amy (Tim) Nichols, Tammy (Eugene) Adams and Jeff Stewart (Melissa Hoffman). Also surviving are his sister, Debbie Threlkeld; lady friend of 12 years, Carla Watson; several nieces and nephews; three grandchildren, Kayla (Chris) McCormick, Mackenzie Adams and Mason Adams; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Libby; sister Barb Bowles; brother-in-law Mike Threlkeld; and nephew Rick Blodgett.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive visitors from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hunt & Son Funeral Home.
