Ernest “Sonny” Albert Melvin, 79, of Crawfordsville passed away Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2020, at Indiana University Health Methodist.
He was born May 22, 1941, at Crawfordsville, to the late Ward E. and Kathryn (Davidson) Melvin.
Ernest attended Hillsboro and Crawfordsville schools. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. He married the love of his life Katherine Charlotte Dehne on Jan. 17, 1963, at Elmdale. He retired from RR Donnelleys in 1996, after 32 years. He was on the Ripley Township Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing, talking, driving, being around people, and helping others. He liked trap shooting, mushroom hunting, and telling his wife how to garden.
Ernest is survived by his wife, Katherine; three children, J. Thomas (Sue) Melvin, Dennis (Debbie) Melvin and Teresa (Phil) Clark; seven grandchildren, Christy Jones-Mason (Blake Kemple), Tiffany (Greg) Lee, Robert (Komal) Clark, Erin Melvin, Tyler (Mackie) Melvin, all of Crawfordsville, Amber (Steve) Ploense of Fort Wayne and James T. (Bri) Melvin of Fowler; seven great-grandchildren, Emily, Elise, Jonathon Ploense of Fort Wayne, Novi Rose Jett, Parker Kemple, Jace and Samuel Melvin, all of Crawfordsville; aunt Joan Nicoson; and brother-in-law Larry Remley
Ernest is preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Kay Remley and Charlene Booe.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4 at Sanders Priebe Funeral Care, 315 S. Washington St., Crawfordsville. The service will be live-streamed and recorded which can be viewed on Ernest’s obituary page at www.sandersfuneralcare.com. Social distancing is expected and masks are required. Burial will follow at Alamo Cemetery.
