Ernest “Ernie” Vaught of Crawfordsville, 92, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 22, 2021, surrounded by his family.

Ernest was an inspirational example of love, loyalty, patience, forgiveness and deep commitment to his wife, children and many relatives and friends he met throughout his life.

Born Oct. 21, 1928, at New Market, Ernest was the 10th of 14 boys born to Wallace and Wilma Vaught. He shared great memories of his tight bond as a band of Vaught brothers. After graduating from Crawfordsville High School, Ernest joined the Army. As a paratrooper, he enjoyed jumping out of planes with the 187th Airborne and served with Distinction in Korea.

In 1997, Ernest retired from 41 years at Raybestos. He retired after 25 years as a Major in the U.S. Army National Guard. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 72 and the Elks. He enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing, working in his yard, and watching the Cubs and IU sports.

Ernest married Myrna Myers on Oct. 19, 1963. They shared a deep love spanning over 57 years.

Surviving family includes: his wife, Myrna; children, Vicki Sering King (Jim), Brad (Lisa), Julie Tomlinson (Wade) and Susan Kirkland (Greg); brother Edwin “Doc” Vaught; grandchildren, Kaitlin (KK), Daniel, Corrie, Faith, Samuel, Josie, Drew and Kassie; and great-grandchildren, James (age 2, who enjoyed doing push-ups with Papaw Ernie), Elena and Valentina. 

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28 at First United Methodist Church, with services at 11:30 a.m. Burial with military rites will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery North.
