Week 7 Football Preview

FB Preview: South faces another tough test in Stars

Posted

Southmont is off to its best start in 41 years after a 28-14 win over Danville pushed the Mounties record to 6-0 (4-0 SAC) on the season a week ago.

The gauntlet continues this week for the Mounties as they travel to take on another SAC powerhouse in Western Boone (5-1, 3-1 SAC). The Stars are coming off a 56-6 thrashing of Frankfort a week ago and come in ranked at No. 6 in Class 3A. The Mounties also made the jump into the top 10 in Class 2A and are ranked No. 9.

“It’s going to be another tough battle,” Southmont coach Desson Hannum said. “Western Boone is not only one of the top teams in the Sagamore Conference, but in all of Class 3A. Coach (Justin) Pelley and his staff do one heck of a job over there. We know that they’re going to play good defense and want to run the ball a ton. It’s a very similar style to the way that we play.”

Western Boone’s rushing attack is led by the SAC leader and senior Trevor Weakley. Weakley has ran for 804 yards (134 per game) and six touchdowns and is averaging nearly seven yards per carry. However while Weakley is the backbone of the Stars offense, senior signal caller Rowen Durbin had a coming out party a week ago throwing for 364 yards and five touchdowns and nearly doubling his season total in yards through the air.

South’s defense will be tested, but that unit for the Mounties has been arguably the strongest part of Southmont’s perfect start to the season as they’re holding opponents to just 13.2 points per game.

“That’s a group that we’ve relied on heavily,” Hannum said of his defense. “They’ve allowed us to play complimentary football with our offense still being able to put up points. We defended the run pretty well last week against Danville and were able to get some stops and even get some negative plays. I think that gives us some confidence going into this week.”

The Mounties will look to hold on to their top spot in the Sagamore Conference when they square off with the Stars  today. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Catch a live broadcast of the game on True Country 106.3 WCDQ beginning at 6:30 p.m.
