Skylar Hoagland, second from left, was the inaugural winner of the Terry Field Wabash River Conference Sportsmanship Award. Field’s children, Travis, Tyler and Tiffany presented the award. The award is named after longtime Covington tennis coach, Terry Field, who began coaching boys tennis in 1985, and retired from coaching following the spring 2023 girls season, after the loss of his wife, Anita. While Terry desired to enter back into the coaching ranks, he developed cancer and was not physically able to coach again. His calm demeanor, dedication to both the sport and his athletes, and his wisdom that he passed along to players and coaches, will forever be remembered by those fortunate enough to have known him. Terry coached in such a way to give his teams the greatest chance for success, while his focus always remained on training young men and women to conduct themselves in a manner that was both appropriate for the sport and for success in life. In order to receive this award, the following criteria needs to be met: the player is either a member of a WRC varsity team or is a senior; the player is nominated by an opposing coach at the WRC Tournament Seed; the player receives the most votes and is confirmed deserving of the award by the player’s coach; and the player is in good standing with the player’s school.
