LINDEN — A sorority girl dumped by her Harvard-bound boyfriend sings and dances her way into law school to win him back, only to find a calling to the courtroom in North Montgomery Middle School’s fall play opening tonight.

“Legally Blonde The Musical JR.” will take the stage at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the North Montgomery High School auditorium. Doors open 30 minutes prior to the performance.

Tickets cost $8 for adults and $5 for students and must be purchased in advanced through the “Fine Arts Tickets” link on the middle school’s website.

The high-energy production is based on the Broadway musical and 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon. “It’s a lot of pop songs from start to finish, and the energy has to be up every day,” director Mike Melvin said.

In the show, Elle Woods (Michelle Hoffman) is expecting her boyfriend Warner Huntington III (Nathan Woosley) to pop the question over dinner. Instead, he says it’s time to focus on his ambitions to become a lawyer and breaks up with her.

To prove she’s serious enough for Warner, Elle applies to Harvard Law School and wins her spot with a song-and-dance routine. She arrives on campus to learn Warner has a new girlfriend. After winning her first court case in class, Elle lands an internship under the school’s most feared teacher.

“She doesn’t need Warner anymore,” Hoffman said.

The interns represent fitness queen Brooke Wyndham (Kylie Sankey), who is accused of killing her husband.
“So I have this huge alibi that I had liposuction on my thighs, but I don’t want to tell anybody because that would ruin my fitness empire, right?” Sankey said.

Elle ends up defending Brooke in court, where her friends and classmates gather to see if she wins the case.

Cama Hall, who plays Warner’s new girlfriend Vivienne Kensington, said the show shines a light on female empowerment.

“It really shows you what kindness means,” Hall said.
