Flower Lovers Garden Club

The Flower Lovers Garden Club met May 7 at Whitlock Hall, St. John’s Episcopal Church.

The meeting  was called to order by President Karen Cook at 1 p.m. Refreshments were served by hostesses Kezia Blackwell, Emily Toomey, Dorothy Fogel and Kathy Leafgreen. The hostesses provided a sack lunch for everyone, so members would have plenty of time for the field trip to Davidson’s Greenhouse after lunch. Table decorations were the bouquets members brought in to be taken to Wellbrooke. The coin jar was passed and roll call taken. Twenty-nine members were in attendance and one guest, Susie Ottgen. At the conclusion of the meeting, members drove to Davidson’s Greenhouse for a planting demonstration and to pick up flowers for the downtown flower pots.

Cook opened the meeting by reminding members of their obligation to buy two tickets for the Garden Tour next month. Members will have an opportunity to purchase tickets at the June meeting as well. Karen also reminded the club that July 2 will be the field trip to Newfields. A sign up sheet was circulated for members wanting to attend. Karen reminded members that the cost for Newfields will be $16 which includes admission to the museum, but not the Lume exhibit.

Terri Trinkle updated everyone on the downtown flower pots. This year the pots will have calibrachoa plants and a Fire Works ornamental grass. Members not able to pick up their flowers up at Davidson’s will be able to stop by Diane Fairfield’s to get them.

Karen invited Denise Ducharme to update the group on the Garden Tour. Denise said there are still opportunities to volunteer the day of the tour, (June 29), and a sheet was passed around for signing up to help. Denise also told members that if they wish to have a preview tour of the gardens on Saturday June 28,  they should meet at St. John’s at 4 p.m. and caravan to the gardens. Members who have plants to sell at the plant auction on the day of the tour, should bring their plants to St. Johns at that time too. If for some reason they can’t bring their plants to the church, they can be dropped off at Janet Hook’s house. Denise also explained that there would be a feature article in the Journal Review every week before the tour. Letters have gone out to the liaisons and the garden owners. Lana Presslor will be picking up the Garden Memorial Stones that will be given to each garden owner.

On May 13 at 10:30 a.m., those members who signed up to paint ladybug rocks will meet at Milligan Park in the shelter to complete that activity. The rocks will be sold at each garden the day of the tour.

At the June meeting, each liaison will be responsible for picking up the ladybug rocks and the Garden Memorial Stone, to be taken to the garden owners. Raffle tickets for a birdbath and glass art will be sold for one dollar at two of the gardens.
