FOOTBALL: Mounties rolled by Warriors

Posted

NEW MARKET —  A county win last week over Crawfordsville came at a price for the Southmont football team on Friday night. Losing both sophomore Quarterback Nick Scott and senior running back Isiah McMasters due to injury, the Mounties called on freshman Nolan Boyer at quarterback for his first varsity start as Southmont played host to Danville. It was all Danville in a 35-7 loss for the Mounties.

“We knew that we were going to be short-handed tonight,” Southmont coach Desson Hannum said. “It was nice to get the win last week but we left that game with injuries to a few of our key players. That made it tougher on us this week. We wanted to come in and play hard, smart and together and that was our theme this week as we prepared for this game, and we did a good job of that in the second half and I’m proud of the kids for that.”

Boyer’s first three passes ended up in the hands of the Warriors who took advantage of the young quarterback. Two of those interceptions came by Brayton McMahon with one being returned 55 yards for a Danville touchdown.

The lone touchdown for the Mounties came with 8:31 left in the fourth quarter as Boyer found Cale Hess from five yards out on 4th and goal. On the night Boyer completed 2-of-8 passes for just 10 yards and carried the ball three times for an additional 16 yards. Southmont on the night was held to just 74 total yards. Despite the performance, Hannum praised Boyer for his efforts.

“There’s obvious talent there with him,” Hannum said. “Being able to come in a tough situation both last week and this week, those aren’t easy things to ask by any means. You add playing one of the best 3A teams in the state on top of that and that’s a tall order for anyone.”

The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Mounties as they will travel to Western Boone (3-3, 2-1 SAC) next week. However Hannum will be keeping his team focused on what they can control themselves at practice.

“There’s a lot of things that we can’t control during the week,” he said. “For us the one thing we can control is having the right attitude and the right intent while at practice and making sure we’re trying to get better as a football team.”
