FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Mounties to get first crack of action Friday, Athenians and Chargers head into week 2

Posted

After one week of high school football, all four area teams are in different places.

Crawfordsville found its offense in week 1, but struggled defensively, while North Montgomery used a balance attack offensively and a stout defensive effort to move to 1-0. Fountain Central and Southmont did not play week 1 because of COVID concerns, and while Fountain Central will miss at least one more week, the Mounties will get first game action on Friday night.

Hamilton Heights (0-1) at North Montgomery (1-0)

Friday night will be the third-straight season the Huskies of Hamilton Heights and North Montgomery will meet in the regular season, and overall the Chargers have a 3-game winning streak overall.

The Huskies fell to Lapel 42-19 in week 1, while North Montgomery beat North Putnam 22-8.

“We have to stay focused on improvement and not become complacent,” North Montgomery coach Josh Thompson said heading into week 2. “We played well enough to win last week but we will have to correct mistakes and be ready for Hamilton Heights.”

North Montgomery quarterback Donavan Haworth threw for over 100 yards and two touchdowns in week 1, and added another 72 yards rushing, while Logan Kelly caught six passes for 68 yards and a score. Hamilton Heights’ QB Guy Griffey threw for 180 yards and three touchdowns in a week 1 loss.

Red’s Prediction: North Montgomery 30, Hamilton Heights 14

North Putnam (0-1) at Southmont (0-0)

Southmont is just ready to see another opponent, and they’ll get that chance on Friday against a winless North Putnam team.

“We are definitely ready to see another opponent at this point,” Southmont coach Desson Hannum said. Typically we would have had a scrimmage and a game, so I am hoping that we adapt quickly to game speed.  It is was a let down not playing last week, so I hoping that makes us want to play that much more this week. We are doing everything we can to be to be ready for Friday night.”

The Mounties, much like the Cougars did in their week 1 22-8 loss to North Montgomery, will have a lot of new faces on offense. Nick Scott will be the quarterback for the Mounties, with Isaiah McMasters the featured running back.

Gunner Burress led the Cougars with 102 passing yards in week 1.

Red’s Prediction: Southmont 18, North Putnam 16

West Vigo (1-0) at Crawfordsville (0-1)

Crawfordsville’s defense has a long way to go after allowing 533 yards in a 55-14 loss at Greencastle week 1, but the Athenians are confident they can improve this week against West Vigo.

“Defensively, the key is to be better on 1st down to create longer yardage situations for the opposing offense,” Crawfordsville coach Kurt Schlicher said. “Also, we are continuing to work on being a better tackling team as well.”

Offense was a bright spot for the Athenians in week 1, especially from sophomore quarterback Kaiden Underwood, who completed 19-of-30 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown. Mikale Willis, Ethan Powell, and Andrew Martin all had at least three catches, while Ethan McLemore caught two passes for 56 yards and a score.

West Vigo is coming off a 46-0 win over Purdue Polytechnic.

Red’s Prediction: West Vigo 34, Crawfordsville 30
