FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Mounties youth will be difference maker

Posted

Southmont’s freshman and sophomore class is loaded with talent.

Mix that with a pair of returning running backs and two young quarterbacks who gained experienced in 2020 and the Mounties are primed to improve upon their 2-7 record last season.

“Going into the season, we have some good young talent,” longtime Southmont coach Desson Hannum. “We have good numbers in both our Freshmen and Sophomore classes. Majority of the summer and preseason has been focused on developing talent and figuring out who can contribute on Friday nights.”

The top two returning players for Southmont are junior Carson Chadd and sophomore Wyatt Woodall.

Chadd ran for 459 yards and five touchdowns last season, while Woodall gained 239 yards on 45 carries. They were both a force on defense as well. Woodall had 52 tackles and Chad 45.

The two quarterbacks who earned playing time last season are Nick Scott and Nolan Boyer. The Mounties also return starters Sam Line, Kasey Line, Collin Martin, Lee Whitecotton, Brady Boller, and Seth Tolliver.

Last season Southmont scored just 35 points in its last five games — showing an emphasis on their backloaded schedule after they started the season 2-2 before dropping five-straight.

“Throughout the latter part of the season we faced some good competition and struggled to put points on the board,” Hannum said. “This season we have to be better against the best competition on our schedule.”

Southmont is searching for its first winning season since 2017.

“This season we want to take a step in the right direction as a team,” Hannum said. “We want to continue to develop the talent that we have in our younger classes and improve as a football team each and every week.”
