FOOTBALL PREVIEW: North hopes to keep winning

Posted

The North Montgomery football team is looking for its third-straight winning season.

The Chargers graduated their top two rushers from last year and top receiver, but do return senior quarterback Donavan Haworth — who threw for just over 1,000 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. He’s one of nine seniors North Montgomery looks to rely on this season.

“We will be looking to our returning senior starters for leadership this season,” North Montgomery coach Josh Thompson said. “We have a solid group of seniors who will lead our team this season. Benjamin Pietsch, Jamyson Roche, Nick Norman, Gabe Laws, Ben Cody, Donavan Haworth, Ethan Gayler, Carter Livingston, and Wil Campbell are excellent role models for our younger players.”

Norman will lead the defense. The senior led the Chargers, who finished 5-5 last season, with 68 tackles, while Laws added 50 tackles.

The Chargers will also lean on juniors Dylan Braun, Todd Laffoon, Gage Galloway, and Jordan Miller — who all started as sophomores last season.

That experience should carry North Montgomery a long way in 2021.

“We focus on daily improvement and all our players have improved over where they were last season,” Thompson added. “Our players are ready to start playing games and are confident in their assignments.”

Last summer the Chargers were limited in activities due to COVID-19, but started the season off 4-0 with a new quarterback. And now the Chargers have had an entire summer with their returning players and mixing them in with new faces.

“We had one of our best summers in terms of attendance for workouts,” Thompson said. “Being able to work out together helps build trust between players which is going to help us to be successful this season.

“Our strengths would be our enthusiasm for the game and our drive to be good football players.”

North Montgomery also expects big things from its sophomore class, including Austin Sulc, Ross Dyson, and Noah Hopkins.
