It was a rough start to the Sagamore Conference schedule for Crawfordsville in a 48-14 loss to Western Boone.
A good start and a huge second quarter gave the Stars their first win of the season to move them to 1-2 and 1-0 in the league, while the Athenians fall to 0-3 overall ad 0-1 in the Sagamore.
“We were a little off the first couple possessions,” C’ville coach Kurt Schlicher,”and then we couldn’t hold them out of the end zone. They are a very well-coached team and they just physically beat us up tonight.”
Those first two possessions were capped by special teams mistakes, which turned into short fields and quick scores for the Stars.
The second quarter belonged to the defending 2A state champs, as they put up 34 points while the Athenians could only score once on a 24-yard pass from Kaiden Underwood to Ethan McLemore.
“It was a tremendous play by McLemore to shake two tacklers and score,” Schlicher said of the freshman, who finished with two grabs for 32 yards.
The Athenians other score came in the fourth quarter, when Kaigen Fields punched it in from five yards out. It was Fields second TD of the season, and the junior finished with 75 rushing yards on 14 carries.
“Kaigen ran hard tonight,” Schlicher said of the season-best game for Fields, who also caught two passes.
Underwood was 17-of-28 passing for 144 yards. He had the one TD and no picks. Alex Herandez led the receivers with five catches for 59 yards.
“Webo had a good defensive scheme,” Schlicher said. “Our young QB learned a lot tonight.”
The Athenians finished with 222 yards on the night and had only one turnover, on another special teams mistake.
The Stars finished with 339 yards of offense.
Senior running back Robby Taylor, who had over 1,000 rush yards last season, turned in his third consecutive 100-plus yard game, going 124 yards on 12 first-half carries. He scored twice.
Junior quarterback Elliot Young had two rushing scores and threw for 89 yards and two more TDs.
The Stars were effective, going 5-of-5 in the red zone with five TDs. They started five drives in Crawfordsville territory and scored all five times.
“We still have to figure out the way to stop the other team’s running game,” Schlicher noted. “We’ll get at the films tomorrow and get to work next week, There is no letup in the Sagamore Conference.”
The Stars head to Tri-West next Friday, while the Athenians are also on the road, heading to Danville.
