FOOTBALL: Tigers streak past Athenians

Posted

Crawfordsville’s football team couldn’t tame the Tigers in a 39-6 football loss to Lebanon.

The loss drops the Athenians to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in the Sagamore Conference, while Lebanon moves to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference. They lost three games to COVID-19 earlier in the season.

“Lebanon is an explosive offense,” Crawfordsville coach Kurt Schlicher said, noting five plays of 20-plus yards. “They are a big-play team and that came out tonight.”

The Tigers jumped out early, scoring three times in the first quarter and twice again in the second.

The Athenians moved the ball some, but were not able to get on the scoreboard until late in the game when Kaiden Underwood connected with Alex Hernandez from 14 yards out.

Hernandez finished with six catches for 65 yards and the score.

“He (Hernandez) is a snap to whistle player,” Schlicher said of the junior, who caught his third TD of the season. “His leadership is growing day by day.”

Underwood finished with 160 yards passing, going 13-of-22. He was picked once. Kaigen Fields had three catches to go with 14 carries for seven net rush yards.

“We were able to move the ball better inn both halves,” Schlicher said. “The task is to find a way to finish and get into the end zone. The good part of tonight is that we were a much better football team than we were last week, and that is encouraging. I really thought Corbin Smith had a really solid two-way game.”

Andrew Martin was limited to one long catch and run, a 48-yard fourth quarter gallop. The senior set up the Athenians touchdown with a 23-yard punt return in the final period that gave his offense a short field and led to the score.

“Martin has been our team leader all season,” Schlicher noted. “He had an outstanding game tonight and showed why he is a team captain.”

The Tigers ground game churned out 334 yards, led by Trevor Winkles, who had 233 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries.

“We executed so much better tonight, especially our offensive line,” Tigers coach Jeff Smock said. “Winkles is a well-rounded back who can kick it into another gear,” he added, noting the junior’s 76 and 79 yard scoring runs.

Garrett Harker threw for 89 yards and two TDs to JC Reese.

Both teams are back in Sagamore Conference action next week, as the Tigers travel to Southmont while the Athenians are home again, hosting Tri-West.
