Garden club recognizes Bell’s garden

The Flower Lovers Garden Club would like to recognize the garden created by Gary Bell as the August Garden of the Month.

Bell’s front and side gardens light up the corner of East Wabash and Grace avenues. This Vietnam veteran, Naval Corpsman, retired Crawfordsville police officer and avid gardener certainly knows how to get your attention.

The beautiful roses he grows are “teas” and “knockouts” in stunning shades of red, pinks and peach colors. Roses, he said, have always been the favorite in the Bell garden and provide a lovely foundation and backdrop for the flowering combinations of lilies, begonias, sedums, black eyed susan and numerous other flowers that are complimentary to each other.

The display of a cherry red bougainvillea is striking against the white fencing as well as the lovely clematis that climbs along the wires edging his property.

Bell’s gardening talents include early planning, trial and error and planting what appeals to his love of color and symmetry. Bell can usually be found working in his yard tending the flowers and the lush grassy spaces or just enjoying the fruits of his labor from his shady front porch.
